In a major move aimed at enhancing the quality of higher and technical education in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has approved the recruitment of vacant teaching and non-teaching posts across non-agricultural public universities and unaided colleges. The initiative aligns with the goals of the New Education Policy and is expected to significantly improve educational standards across the state.

Speaking at a review meeting held at Vidhan Bhavan, the Chief Minister emphasised the need to accelerate the recruitment process and finalise cadre structures for teaching and non-teaching staff in universities. He also announced approval for 100 per cent recruitment in government-aided engineering institutions. The meeting was attended by Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, Additional Chief Secretaries Venugopal Reddy, O. P. Gupta, Saurabh, and Rajgopal Deora, along with other senior officials and university heads.

The Chief Minister noted that the number of technology universities in Maharashtra is relatively low and stressed the importance of running existing institutions at full capacity. He approved recruitment for 105 teaching posts and one teacher-equivalent post at Lakshminarayan Innovative Technological University, along with a grant of ₹8 crore for its administrative and daily operations. He also approved the recruitment of 788 teaching and 2,242 non-teaching posts in public institutions, and 5,012 assistant professor posts in unaided colleges under the Directorate of Higher Education. A revised cadre of 603 posts for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University was sanctioned, and 100 per cent recruitment was cleared for institutions such as VJTI and Shri Guru Gobind Singh Engineering College, Nanded.

In addition to recruitment, the Chief Minister approved a proposal to increase library grants by 40 per cent and instructed that it be immediately submitted to the Finance Department. He directed a review of public libraries under categories A, B, C, and D for potential upgradation and proposed the restoration of government recognition to new libraries equivalent to the 1,706 previously de-recognised ones. Special incentive grants were also approved for public libraries completing 50, 75, and 100 years of service.

Chief Minister Fadnavis also called for the establishment of a dedicated Department of Science and Technology in Maharashtra. Citing the growing role of technology across sectors, he emphasised the need for a specialised department and suggested studying similar models in other states to prepare a comprehensive plan for implementation.

The Chief Minister’s announcements mark a significant step toward strengthening Maharashtra’s educational infrastructure, supporting academic institutions, and ensuring long-term improvements in the quality and accessibility of higher education.
