The Maharashtra government has decided to accelerate the proposed Metro-10 corridor between Gaimukh (Retibunder) and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk (Ghodbunder) in a bid to ease worsening traffic congestion in the Thane–Mira Bhayandar belt.

Tendering to begin next week

The 9.7-km elevated metro stretch, which will serve as an extension of the Dahisar–Kashigaon link up to Gaimukh, will enter the tendering stage next week, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said.

The decision was taken at a review meeting conducted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) under the guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The project is estimated to cost around Rs 8,553 crore. Construction is expected to commence within three to four months, with a completion target set for 2029.

Ghodbunder Road widening planned

Alongside the metro expansion, authorities have proposed widening the congested Ghodbunder Road from its current 30-metre width to 60 metres.

The 5.5–6 km-long concrete road project is expected to cost approximately Rs 1,200 crore. Land acquisition between Gaimukh and Kashigaon will be undertaken by MMRDA, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 150–200 crore.

Compensation and rehabilitation framework

Officials said compensation for affected landowners, including those on tribal land, will be provided as per government norms. In addition, developers may be offered incentives such as Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) and Floor Space Index (FSI) benefits as part of the rehabilitation framework.

Pod taxi projects in pipeline

The government is also planning to roll out pod taxi systems in Thane, Mira Bhayandar and Navi Mumbai under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for these projects is expected to be completed within six months. Tendering for multiple road infrastructure works within Thane and Mira Bhayandar municipal limits is also set to begin shortly.

Deadline for key infrastructure works

Authorities have been directed to complete the Ghodbunder Road widening before the onset of the monsoon. Additionally, work worth around Rs 75 crore to relocate Mahavitaran (MSEDCL) utility poles is expected to be completed within the next three months.

Crackdown on illegal transport operations

Meanwhile, the state has initiated action against illegal bike taxi operations. Licences of app-based aggregators such as Ola, Uber and Rapido have been temporarily suspended, officials said.

The government has also made it mandatory for auto-rickshaw drivers to have basic knowledge of Marathi. Inspections will continue until May 1, and those found violating the rule may face penalties.
