A Kharghar-based couple has achieved two successful pregnancies despite the husband being diagnosed with azoospermia, a rare condition in which no sperm is present in semen. In the latest development, the woman is now two months pregnant with twins following advanced fertility treatment at a Navi Mumbai hospital.
The couple married in 2016 and was living in Kharghar. Due to the husband’s medical condition, they faced severe challenges in conceiving and were deeply anxious about their chances of becoming parents. Medical tests revealed that the husband had severe male infertility, while the woman was medically fit to conceive.
After detailed counselling and evaluation, doctors advised an advanced fertility procedure known as Testicular Sperm Extraction along with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection. During the TESE procedure, doctors retrieved healthy sperm directly from the husband’s testicles. These sperm were then used for ICSI, a process in which a single sperm is injected into an egg in a laboratory setting.

The procedure resulted in the formation of seven embryos, which were frozen for future use. Two months later, two good-quality embryos were transferred into the woman’s uterus, leading to the birth of a healthy baby girl, who is now nearly three years old. Encouraged by the success, the couple returned three years later to use the frozen embryos again. The most recent embryo transfer has resulted in a twin pregnancy, with the woman currently in her second month.
Dr Nikita Lad Patel, gynaecologist and fertility specialist, said that even severe male infertility can now be treated using modern medical techniques. She said, “Advanced procedures such as TESE and ICSI offer renewed hope to couples who wish to have their own biological children.” Doctors also noted that embryo freezing allows couples to plan future pregnancies without undergoing repeated treatment cycles, making the process less physically and emotionally demanding.

The husband said he married his wife in 2016 in Patna through an arranged marriage. “Until 2020, we tried to have a child but were unsuccessful. In 2020, I was transferred to Mumbai, where I work as a software engineer. We were very depressed and under pressure from family to become parents,” he said.
“In 2021, we finally visited a hospital and underwent medical tests. The reports showed that I had a medical issue, while my wife was fit to conceive,” he added. Following treatment, the woman conceived, and in December 2022, she delivered a baby girl. “She is now almost three years old. After six years of marriage, we were finally parents,” he said.

In 2025, the couple returned to the hospital and were told they could plan another pregnancy using the frozen embryos. “In July 2025, we decided to try again. That attempt has been successful, and my wife is now pregnant with twins. I feel extremely lucky and happy, and I hope every couple is blessed with children,” he said.
