Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday launched a blistering attack on the Mahayuti government, comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, directing his party cadre to sustain a statewide agitation until “tainted and controversial” ministers are removed from the Cabinet.
Thackeray urged his workers to start a “Bhrashtachar Pe Charcha” (discussion on corruption) campaign in every corner of Maharashtra, aimed at exposing alleged graft in the current regime. “Whenever you go for a haircut or stop for a cup of tea, talk about the corruption in this government,” he said, likening the drive to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Chai Pe Charcha” initiative.
Protests were organised by UBT leaders across the state, with Thackeray himself leading a demonstration at Shivaji Park in Dadar. In a pointed jibe at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Thackeray asked, “How are tainted ministers tolerated by a man who I believe has a clean image? Despite having a majority, why is Fadnavis not acting against erring ministers?”
The controversy comes amid allegations against former agriculture minister Manikarao Kokate, accused of playing rummy on his phone during a legislative session — a charge he denies. Opposition demands for his resignation were ignored, with the government instead reshuffling his portfolio. Similarly, Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam faces flak for alleged links to a dance bar registered in his mother’s name, which he denies.
Shinde Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad also drew outrage after allegedly punching a canteen staffer in the Assembly over food quality. Thackeray warned that if the BJP-led government failed to act, “The people and the UBT will show you in the coming elections.” The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) comprises the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP. Uddhav also attacked the BJP over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s expose on irregularities in the voters' list. Fadnavis dismissed the criticism, saying, “Those who have gone against public mandate should not lecture us.”
