A leopard was found dead along national highway 53 in Bhandara in Maharashtra on Thursday morning, a forest department official said.

The male leopard, around two-and-half-year-old, was run over by an unknown vehicle in the early hours of the day in Kalewada beat near compartment 170, the official said.

The carcass was shifted to the forest department's Gadegaon depot and it will disposed of as per National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) guidelines, he said.

In June 2023, Wildlife SOS and the Maharashtra Forest Department rescued a male leopard who was trapped in a 30-foot-deep open well in Nimgaon Sava village in Otur Forest Range, and released into its habitat. The residents of Nimgaon Sava village were alerted by an unfamiliar sound from a well. Upon a closer inspection, they saw a leopard struggling to stay afloat in nearly 30-foot-deep open well. Concerned for the animal’s well-being, they immediately informed the Maharashtra Forest Department. A rescue team from the Wildlife SOS Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre was also called to assist the forest officers. Equipped with the necessary rescue gear, the team reached the location immediately. After assessing the situation, the NGO’s team and the forest department staff devised a strategy.

In May 2023, the Maharashtra Forest Department and Wildlife SOS rescued a juvenile female leopard from an 80-foot-deep well in the Savargav hamlet, located in Junnar Forest Range. The villagers noticed the leopard straining to remain afloat and contacted the authorities. The Wildlife SOS Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre’s three-person rescue team was then dispatched. A plastic container fastened with ropes was lowered into the well for the exhausted leopard to rest. It was successfully removed after a 30-minute struggle. Dr Akhilesh Dhage, Veterinary Officer, Wildlife SOS said, “The leopard has not sustained any kind of injuries, and remains active and healthy.”

In November 2022, three people suffered minor injuries after a leopard entered a housing complex in Kalyan in Maharashtra's Thane district, reported news agency PTI. The big cat sneaked into the premises of Anugrah Tower on Chinchpada Road in the morning, leaving panicked residents to call in the forest department and police personnel, an official told PTI. "Three people sustained minor injuries and were given first-aid at a local hospital. The leopard has been kept captive and we are awaiting a cage into which it will be shifted (for evacuation from the site)," Range Forest Officer Sanjay Channe told reporters.
