Maharashtra zilla parishad schools to take lessons from the Delhi model

A committee has been formed which will closely observe and study the model of Delhi civic schools in terms of facilities provided to teachers and students, ways of teaching, learning process and use of technology. A report will then be submitted based on which a pilot project will be held held in Aurangabad

A seven-member committee has been formed to visit Delhi Nagar Nigam schools to study their models so that similar practices can be implemented in zilla parishad (ZP) schools of Maharashtra.


The order issued by the Rural Development department of Maharashtra earlier this week declared formation of a committee for the task with an objective to better the ZP schools in the state. These include government-run schools in all rural areas of Maharashtra as well as rural belts in the outskirts of cities too. These schools, which generally cater to the underprivileged sections of the society, are seeing many experiments in the past few years to ensure better-quality education for students.

An official from the department, on condition of anonymity, said , “Delhi’s civic schools are said to have shown great transformation in the recent past with many parents preferring those schools compared to other high-profile schools. It would be worthwhile to learn and understand their practices in order to see if we can bring about similar changes here to ensure good flow of students to ZP schools as well as to ensure good education for students that is at par with private schools.”

It will be a seven-member committee including education officers, teachers and school principals. It will closely observe and study the model of Delhi civic schools in terms of facilities provided to teachers and students, ways of teaching, learning process and use of technology. A report will then be submitted based on which a pilot project will be held in Aurangabad district.

“We will see strengths and weaknesses of these schools and see what can we replicate,” said B B Chavan, education officer (primary) at Aurangabad, who is part of the committee. Now that the project is approved, visit dates for the study would be confirmed soon.
