After mid-day highlighted the struggle faced by women commuters at the Kalyan end of platform no. 5 at Dombivli station, railway authorities have finally taken note — and acted. On September 30, officials from the Kalyan railway technical department inspected the site using a regular 15-coach train departing from Kalyan to check alignment and crowd movement.
They eventually decided to remove about five feet 3 inches of fencing on one side of the platform to ease the boarding process for women commuters, particularly those using the staircase, without affecting platform safety or crowd control. The move comes just in time, given the ongoing Navratri rush.
Lata Argade, president of the Tejaswini Mahila Railway Pravasi Sangh, welcomed the decision and credited mid-day’s report, “It was a well-written story, and the photograph showed the reality clearly. Thanks to your coverage, officials took swift action. My only question is — why didn’t they observe this earlier? Still, I truly appreciate the effort. On behalf of the commuters, thank you, mid-day, for highlighting this issue.”
