The Do Tanki area remained tense for a few hours early Thursday after windshields of more than 30 cars and tempos were smashed by unknown miscreants. Within just 30 minutes, the police found that the windshields were damaged during a fight between two groups over the theft of a vehicle battery. As it is festival time, the police didn&rsquo;t want to take any chances and initiated a high-level investigation.

Rupesh Vashirde, who owns a transport business, said, &ldquo;I was having dinner after completing the Janmashtami puja when a friend came and said the windshields of my vehicles were damaged. Two cars and two tempos of mine were damaged.&rdquo;

Police sources said a group of women, who run a scrap business in the area, steal batteries from cars and bikes and sell them illegally. &ldquo;They have stolen several batteries in the past. A group of boys from the locality had filed a complaint against them at JJ Marg police station, but the police took no action. Last month, a case was registered against the women&rsquo;s group,&rdquo; another source said.

According to cops, the group of boys and the women had a fight at 12.30 am. &ldquo;The boys confronted the women saying the batteries of their bikes had been stolen. A heated exchange followed and the women called the police. Enraged, the boys decided to escape from the spot but they broke windshields of more than 30 vehicles while escaping,&rdquo; an official said.
DCP Manoj Sharma (Zone 1) said, &ldquo;While the boys were escaping and breaking the windshields, our team reached the spot and caught one of them. We have registered a case against 5 people for rioting and causing damage to public property. We have the names of other accused; they too will be arrested soon.&rdquo;
Maulana Azad Road residents face a jurisdiction issue between JJ Marg police and VP Road police.
While the south-bound road falls under JJ Marg police station, the north-bound road falls under VP Road police station.
The accused broke windshields of vehicles on both sides of the road. Rupesh said, &ldquo;The windows of two of my cars were broken under JJ Marg police station, while those on the tempos were broken under VP Road police station. It will be lengthy and irritating complaint filing procedure for me.&rdquo;
