In an inspection conducted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) flying squad, officials found that the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project works in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) area were allegedly flouting several pollution-related norms.
While, according to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRC), 85 per cent of the excavation works have been completed, the flying squads which visited the site last Friday observed that many of the 28-point rule list were not being followed.
Giving detailed information on the list of norms flouted, H East Ward Officer, Mrudula Ande, said, “The matter of rising pollution levels has been taken very seriously by the Corporation."
According to the BMC official, the violations include:
- Water sprinkling/misting/spraying/fogging is not carried out during excavation and rock-breaking work.
- Dust found on the project area road.
- Air pollution monitoring equipment not installed as per the BMC’s approved make.
- Huge quantities of materials are kept open and not covered by tarpaulin/green net.
- A 35 ft tin/metal sheet is not erected on the north side of the site.
- Adjacent roads around the periphery of the project are not maintained clean.
- Non-mosquito tanks observed. Hence, notices are issued to the contractor.
In response, the NHSRC has assured that it will take the necessary actions and ensure that no further pollution is caused.
