With Mumbai experiencing relentless rainfall over the past three days, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has issued a passenger advisory alerting travellers to potential flight delays.
A statement from the airport read: “Due to inclement weather and the forecast of heavy rain, passengers are requested to connect with their respective airlines to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport.”
On Monday, the airport recorded nine go-arounds and one flight diversion due to low runway visibility, sources said. The diverted flight was Indigo flight 6E6468 (tail number VT-IIJ) from Ahmedabad to Mumbai, which took off at 10:07 am and landed at 11:35 am in Surat as weather conditions prevented it from landing in Mumbai. While no major delays have been reported at the airport so far, authorities expect disruptions if the heavy rains continue.
The CSMIA statement on X added: “Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport earlier than usual to ensure adequate time for security processing.”
In addition to the airport advisory, airlines including Indigo have also informed passengers about potential delays caused by the ongoing weather conditions.
The IMD issued a 'red alert', forecasting extremely heavy rains at isolated places in Mumbai and neighbouring areas on Monday, prompting the city civic body to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also appealed to residents to step out only if necessary.
Roads in several areas got inundated after the heavy downpour for the third consecutive day on Monday.
Some low-lying areas like the Andheri Subway and Lokhandwala Complex witnessed water accumulation at a few locations, affecting traffic movement.
BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani announced that all educational institutions would remain shut for the afternoon session, citing the safety of students amid continuous downpour since morning.
The civic body, in a statement, appealed to the people to step out only if necessary.
It also appealed to residents to contact its disaster control helpline 1916 in case of emergencies or for official updates.
Heavy rains have been lashing Mumbai since Saturday.
