Commuters in Mumbai were affected by the day-long strike called by cab aggregators, and many complained of cancellations, delayed arrivals and non-availability of cabs. Many Rapido bike riders were also targeted and stopped from travelling by striking drivers.
Citizens were especially inconvenienced at Mumbai and Pune airports due to the strike, and many had to wait in the airport area due to the lack of vehicles.
"Landed in Mumbai and regret why!!! Ola, Uber strike!!! Rates are double the normal. Why the hell do all disruptions happen here? I came last month, and the same thing happened then too. "If the drivers don’t want platforms, no one compels them, but once onboard, why this nonsense?!" said commuter Ajit.
Another commuter said there were issues in getting the cab online too. “One driver came and then refused to accept the ride. There was total chaos on Thursday,” said Ranjan Guha, another commuter.
The striking union claimed success. Drivers observed the bandh in all the cities of Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Nashik as well.
“The drivers' spontaneous response to the one-day bandh to bring corruption in the transport department to the attention of the Prime Minister was a success. For the past several days, cab and auto rickshaw drivers in the state have been protesting in various ways for their demands, and a one-day bandh was planned on October 9 to draw attention to the problems of the drivers during the Prime Minister's visit to Mumbai.
Today, more than 90 per cent of the cab drivers spontaneously closed their vehicles from 12 am onwards, and rickshaw drivers also received a good response in many places,” Dr Keshav Nana Kshirsagar, president of Bharatiya Gig Kamgar Manch, who is spearheading the agitation, said.
“The strike was called for the demand that the fares fixed by the Transport Department should be displayed on applications like Ola, Uber, and Rapido, and that bike taxis should be stopped immediately,” he added.
