Amid the festive season, the Western and Central railways have increased platform ticket rates from Rs 10 to Rs 50 on a temporary basis at major stations in Mumbai from Saturday to curb overcrowding.

The new rates will apply to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dadar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Thane, Kalyan and Panvel, all busy junctions catering to long-distance trains, and will remain in force till October 31, CR chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar.

The hike was brought in place as heavy passenger rush was being observed amid the festive season, said Sutar.

"In view of the festive season rush at railway stations & to regulate the number of passengers in Railway Premises including Platforms & FOBs, it has been decided to increase the Rate of Platform ticket from Rs.10/- to Rs.50/- over few nominated stations of WR's Mumbai Central Division with immediate effect till 31st October 2022," Western Railway said.

As per an official release, the platform ticket rate has been increased at Mumbai Central, Dadar, Borivali, Bandra Terminus, Vapi, Valsad, Udhna and Surat stations in the Mumbai division.

The decision was taken in view of the festive season rush at railway stations and to regulate the number of passengers in railway premises, including platforms and foot overbridges, it stated.

Such temporary hikes in platform tickets have been implemented by the zonal railways in Mumbai several times in the last two years.
