With the mercury touching 35.7&deg;C, Sunday became the third hottest day in May in 10 years. In 2010 the temperature had touched a scorching 37&deg;C for the same month.

Despite being a holiday, most people preferred staying indoors to beat the heat. However, those who were out on the streets had to bear the brunt of the sweltering heat. Saiesh Chodankar, a student, said, &ldquo;I had to step out of the house to attend my classes. Had there been no lectures, I&rsquo;d have surely spent the day indoors no matter what.&rdquo;
Commenting on the rising temperatures, Rajeev Nair, director, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Mumbai, said, &ldquo;The temperature would remain more or less the same, and a few fluctuations could be excepted. The month of May usually remains hotter and the temperature is always above 30&deg;C.&rdquo;
As per IMD&rsquo;s data, the hottest day for the ongoing month was recorded on May 12, 1979, when the temperature reached 41&deg;C. While, the lowest temperature ever recorded in May was 23.6&deg; C. However, from 2005 to 2014, the temperatures for May have remained above 30&deg;C.
