Dharavi man arrested after punching constable in the face, injuring him, while he attempted to defuse a family fight

The swift actions of a police constable, Anil Dattu Jadhav, 40, saved the life of a man who was being attacked by an individual wielding a sickle amid a property dispute in Khar West on December 24. According to sources, Jadhav used his baton to block the weapon and pushed the alleged assailant, Roshan Ramesh Patil alias Singh, before he could injure the victim, Hemant Dalal.

According to police sources, the incident occurred around 2.30 pm at Neera Villa building, opposite Khar railway station. A police officer said, “Singh first assaulted Dalal with a bamboo rod and then fetched a koyta [sickle] from inside the house, with the intention to kill. Hearing the commotion, Constable Anil Dattu Jadhav, who was on duty at a nearby police chowkie, rushed to the spot.”

The officer added, “At a critical moment, when the accused attempted to strike Dalal a possibly fatal blow to the head, Constable Jadhav blocked the attack with his baton, pushed the accused away, and snatched the weapon.” Constable Jadhav then apprised senior officers of the situation and rushed Dalal to Bhabha Hospital for treatment in a police mobile unit van. Police sources said Dalal sustained serious injuries to his head; however, he is said to be stable.

A police officer said, “We have registered the FIR against Singh for allegedly attacking Dalal. We have arrested him under Sections 109, 351[3], 49, and 3[5] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with Sections 4 and 25 of the Arms Act, and Sections 37[1] and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act.”
