Waliv police had found a dead body near a petrol pump in Susai Pada Ghodbunder, on the evening of January 21 and, in the name of evidence, they had recovered a railway ticket from the victim&rsquo;s clothes. His throat had been slit using a sharp weapon.
With the help of the ticket, the cops started checking if anybody had filed a missing person&rsquo;s report that matched with the victim and they also began looking at CCTV footage of Mumbai Central station. They got their first clue when they found that a missing complaint had been lodged by the father of one Mashooq Ali, a resident of Kherwadi in Bandra.
Mashooq&rsquo;s father told the police that he and his son were professional masseurs. When the police showed him the CCTV footage, he pointed at Javed Marediya, who was with his son at the station, and said he was friends with Mashooq. Police then arrested Marediya on January 30.
Investigation revealed that 30-year-old Marediya, a Nagpada resident, who used to work at a sweet shop, was romantically involved with Mashooq.
Police then found out that Marediya had been blackmailing the victim for money as he had a few of his pictures in compromising positions.
&ldquo;We had arrested Javed from Nagpada area on January 30 and he was produced in Thane court the next day. He was remanded to police custody till February 4,&rdquo; said investigating officer police inspector Ganesh Mal of Waliv police station.
The accused has been booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
