Star talk in New York Who says media moguls are only in the news for controversy? Well, spicy news is always good for headlines, but here is an Indian media bigwig making waves in all the right ways.
Star India CEO Uday Shankar will be the first Indian CEO from the media and entertainment industry to speak at the Paley Center for Media in New York, tomorrow. Shankar will be addressing the breakfast session of the Paley Dialogue, which is to be moderated by Time International editor Bobby Ghosh.
We wish we could be a fly on the wall there (not that there are likely to be any flies at the Paley Center!) and not least because of the illustrious shoulder-rubbing that is sure to happen. There is, of course, James Murdoch, co-COO of 21st Century Fox, who will introduce Shankar, and attendees include an array of honchos ranging from media houses to financial institutions.
Shankar plans to speak about Star India&rsquo;s journey, particularly its trajectory in the direction of empowering social change &mdash; of course, he refers to the talk show Satyamev Jayate. Having been a journalist himself, we think Shankar is equipped to deliver an engaging address no nodding off in the audience there!
Time lapse Are we late, or early? This was the question on commuters&rsquo; minds on seeing this indicator at CST station yesterday afternoon. The Harbour line indicators seemed to have taken on a life of their own.

The indicator on platform 1 showed 2.45pm and on the next platform where a train was waiting to depart, the indicator read 1.41pm. Why people, it was enough to confuse even the trains themselves!
Helping to heal, musically Being differently abled no longer means having to hold back in any sphere of life. And that includes music. It was thus heartening to see a young lady with special needs, Dharni Chari, sing on stage at a concert organised by the Musikings group, at Matunga last weekend.

The group, which includes performers from all walks of life from the age of eight to 50, has been formed by counsellor Viveck Kantawla, who believes in using music as a means to help in healing. For Dharni, who is afflicted with cerebral palsy, music is part of life.
Her mother Kanti Chari says she has an excellent sense of rhythm, and prefers soft numbers such as ghazals and bhajans. At the concert, titled Tarane Naye Purane, Dharni sang the invocation &ldquo;Hum ko mann ki shakti dena&rdquo;. An apt song for the right cause, indeed.
Corporates get kicking As fans rev up for the football fiesta, also known as the World Cup, in June, Mumbai&rsquo;s corporate honchos are gearing up for some football action of their own. Mumbai&rsquo;s Saran Sports hosts the Smaaash Corporate Soccer 5s on May 31 and June 1 at the Western Railway Sports Ground, Lower Parel.
Over 70 teams have registered for the tournament, to be played on a league cum knock-out basis with both men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s teams participating. With all the hardcore football action, there is also a community angle. The highlight will be an exhibition match between India Inc&rsquo;s bigwigs, several CEOs playing against NGO kids.
Says Sanjiv Saran Mehra of Saran Sports, &ldquo;This match is a showcase for talented underprivileged kids. Some of these kids may catch the eye of corporates and avenues may open up to them.
Besides, for many of these children it is a great day out.&rdquo; Saran Sports also says that though this is held every year, the buzz is palpable with FIFA fever hitting the city. Seems like it is not just the mercury heating up things in Mumbai.
