Muscle tussle

Mirroring the just-concluded BMC elections and subsequent results, two teams slug it out in a game of tug of war on Dadar beach with a sleeping dog for an audience.

Golf with a purpose

The Golf Foundation will mark its 25 years of impact with a fundraising golf event that will be organised at Chembur’s Bombay Presidency Golf Club on January 19. All the proceeds will be used in supporting its high-performance athletic programmes, which have nurtured successful golfers including Shubham Jaglan, Hitaashi Bakshi, Manu Gandas, and Rashid Khan, among others. The foundation has helped over 700 young talented athletes for national, international, and professional careers. Founder and president, Amit Luthra (left) said, “India has no shortage of talent, but we still face a shortage of access and infrastructure in sport, and golf is no exception. The Golf Foundation will focus on expanding its work into grassroots-level infrastructure improvement to strengthen the golf ecosystem across the country.”

Perseverance pays

Motivation, they say, is often closer than one realises. With the Tata Mumbai Marathon scheduled for January 18, Andheri-based runner Ayushi Kedia is emerging as an inspiring figure for Mumbaikars with similar aspirations. The runner and half-marathon champion will be participating in this race for the first time after her leg injury in the early months of 2025, which shook her confidence. Kedia has since then, made a remarkable comeback, completing 10 races within a year. Her runs include the Mumbai Half Marathon, Mumbai 10K Challenge, Swami Vivekanand Run, and the Bandra Half Marathon, among others.

Kedia admits she had decided to discontinue running, overwhelmed by the fear of re-injury. Her return was motivated by her friend, Elvis Pranil, whose support proved crucial. “I had given up on running as I was too paranoid about injuring my leg again. But Pranil helped me out. He asked me to start using a resistance band for 30 minutes, every day — which was followed by a slow push to run 5k and then 10k — which reinstated my faith in myself and made me gear up for the marathon.” More than endurance, running taught me discipline, resilience, trust, and the fact that it is a slow and long term process.” Now preparing for her debut at tomorrow’s Tata Mumbai Marathon, Kedia’s journey stands as a reminder that setbacks can become turning points — and that steady, patient progress often leads to the strongest comebacks.

It’s a classic!

Get your creative side out as Gaysi is hosting yet another, Opn Art House, a revamped version of its earlier Bazaar — which started in 2018 in Mumbai and Delhi. The free-entry festival which is scheduled for February 14 and 15 will feature an indie art bazaar, community workshops, and a themed exhibition, titled, Bad Artist. Saksshie Juneja, founder of Gaysi Family, said, “With a focus on the theme, Reimagining Indian Classics, we’re expecting a lot of visitors.” The event will also include a performance by Berlin-based drag collective, Duck Tape, in collaboration with Max Mueller Bhavan, Delhi.

Internationally acclaimed dancer, Mavin Khoo (left) will open G5A’s ‘In Residence’ season on February 8, with Surrendering My Radha — a Bharatanatyam performance — marking his 50-year artistic journey. Reflecting on the residency, Khoo said, “This has deepened my curiosity as an artiste as I’m working with an entirely Indian collective, and allowing time and space for process”. He added that his conversation with Bharatnatyam dancer, Vaibhav Arekar will explore “what it means to live inside our practice over time”, holding on to tradition and change together.

Olive branches out in BKC

It is a return to the familiar neighbourhood of BKC for Olive. Alongside their latest outlet in Bengaluru, the Olive Bar and Cafe now has a presence in the same space that once housed Toast & Tonic. “We are now present across three locations in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi. The space in BKC had been with us for a while, and we already had a young and captive demographic of patrons in the neighbourhood. So, it felt like a good idea to explore the casual café experience,” restaurateur AD Singh revealed. The new space will host their first culinary
event today.
