Island City wows Venice It always is heartwarming to hear about debut efforts making a mark on global platforms, especially in the cine universe. The latest news comes all the way from Italy that recently held the 72nd Venice Film Festival.

As part of Venice Days sidebar, debutante director Ruchika Oberoi showcased the world premiere of Island City, a Hindi feature film produced by National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). Boasting of a talented cast including Vinay Pathak and Tannishtha Chatterjee, the film won the Fedora award for the Best Director of a Debut Film.
Now, we hope Mumbaikars can also view this film soon. After all, this film is about three comic-dramatic stories, set in this very island city.
I want to be king The Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community&rsquo;s latest offering, a &lsquo;drag king&rsquo; show, played out to packed houses over the weekend at the lounge-bar-cum-restaurant, called Tilt All Day in Lower Parel.

Theatre actor Puja Sarup took on the delirious persona of Shammi Kapoor. Drag Kings are of course, the opposite of Drag Queens. In the former, women dress as men, often taking on a celebrity persona. While &lsquo;drag kings&rsquo; have been seen at private parties, this was Mumbai&rsquo;s first drag king public performance.
The performance also starred actor Sheena Khalid. For a first we heard it was quite a smashing d&eacute;but. Mumbai opens its heart, mind and cultural spaces to more LGBT-themed events. Brrrrring it on, we say.
Lalitha Lajmi&rsquo;s canvas This one promises to be a one-of-a-kind exhibition. Veteran artist, Lalitha Lajmi, will showcase her recent works in water colours at the Gallery Art &amp; Soul, starting today, from 6 pm onwards.

Titled Performers, it will continue till September 30, (Monday-Saturday, 10 am to 7.30 pm, Sunday 11 am-4 pm). Going by the few prints that we&rsquo;ve seen, the exhibition promises to a beautiful insight into Lajmi&rsquo;s state of mind and her thinking process that find reflection on her canvas. All roads lead to Thane The 433-year-old St John the Baptist Church in Thane was a unique venue for a press conference held over the weekend. After a mammoth, year-and-a-half-long restoration, the church will open its doors to all, on September 20.

What&rsquo;s really interesting, is that the church will stay open everyday for a month, starting September 21, from 6 pm-8 pm, for public viewing.
