The next-level upgrade of Mumbai railway has started on the ground. Eight companies, many of them prominent international names, have bid for the railway upgrade initiated by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC).
The MRVC has launched technical studies to assess the feasibility and requirements of various aspects of phase four of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), including the integration of Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC), also known as cab signalling, and Kavach systems.
Initiated in 2002, the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) has changed the design of Mumbai locals, inducted new trains and built additional corridors. The fourth phase will now take local trains deeper into the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The MUTP 4 has path-breaking plans like direct train connectivity between Central and Western Railway, new local corridors for Mumbai, Kavach and cab signalling to cut down train headway (the time interval or distance between two consecutive trains on the same track), and the introduction of more 15-car and AC trains.
The MUTP 4 will integrate recommendations of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s Comprehensive Transport Study 2021 and new-age developments in Indian Railways.
