Structural work on the elevated deck and three major east-west bridges is moving swiftly under Phase-II. These upgrades at Ghatkopar station aim to create seamless passenger movement similar to Borivli and Andheri’s upgraded layouts
The newly constructed gang-hut
Work on two of the three mega east-west bridges, along with elevated decks parallel to the station, has finally picked up pace after the monsoon. The Ghatkopar Station Improvement Project under Phase-II is moving ahead steadily, with major structural works taking shape as part of efforts to ease congestion and enhance passenger movement.
The upgrade includes construction of a new elevated deck, two 12-metre-wide foot overbridges (FOBs) at the north and south ends, and additional passenger amenities. The work, pushed by a series of mid-day reports in 2019, has finally paved way for a bigger and better Ghatkopar suburban station.
Works expedited
According to officials, work on the elevated deck on the Platform No. 1 side has advanced with six of the planned 15 foundations completed. Progress is also notable on the 12-metre-wide south FOB, where the main foundation has been finished, and main girders for one of the bridge’s three spans have already been launched. Meanwhile, on the north-end FOB, one foundation has been completed, and work on the remaining three foundations is currently underway.

A redundant railway gang-hut that stood in the alignment of the upcoming north FOB has been dismantled after being relocated to a designated site within the station premises. The vacated area will now be used for the north FOB’s foundation work.
Once the site is fully cleared, authorities plan to begin construction of the new 12-metre-wide north FOB — a key component of the long-term mobility enhancement strategy for Ghatkopar station. The seven-point Ghatkopar upgrade plan includes wide elevated decks and three additional 12-metre bridges linking them all together, like at Borivli and Andheri stations.
Heavy footfall at Ghatkopar
Ghatkopar serves as an important junction as it sees large footfall due to the integration of Mumbai Metro Line 1 with the station premises. Ghatkopar station sees an average footfall of about four lakh commuters per day, and witnesses extreme crowding during rush hours.

mid-day impact
mid-day had highlighted in a front-page report on August 30, 2019, how Ghatkopar station had turned into a deathtrap. Following this, former local member of parliament from Mumbai North East, Manoj Kotak, followed up on the issue with Piyush Goyal. The then-railway minister, at a public function on September 13, 2019, directed railway officials to come up with an elaborate plan and upgrade the station. Five years on, work on Phase-I has been partially completed with escalators still being set up, but the crucial crowded part of the station remains the same. The work is being carried out by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation.
