In a move aimed to ensure that offenders are brought to book, Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee (ZRUCC) demanded the Central Railway (CR) authorities install CCTV cameras inside compartments reserved for handicapped commuters.

ZRUCC, which represents suburban rail commuters of Mumbai, said the request was made after they received a number of complaints from handicapped commuters stating encroachment of compartments reserved for them by able-bodied commuters as well as GRP and RPF personnel. The request was made during a meet between CR officials and ZRUCC members on October 6.
&ldquo;I have requested CR authorities to look into the demand of installing CCTV cameras inside handicapped compartment. Just like the ones installed in ladies compartments. I have received complaints that regular commuters, even policemen, enter their coach and occupy seats. At times, they even abuse and humiliate handicapped passengers if they protest,&rdquo; said Subhash Gupta, ZRUCC member.
He claimed primary reason behind this demand was to have evidence to nail offenders. Gupta said he also received complaints claiming that policemen demand proof whenever a handicapped passenger approaches them to register a complaint against offenders. A CR official, who was part of the meet, said, &ldquo;We have noted down this demand. Initially, we would be looking at securing the ladies compartment with CCTVs.&rdquo;
Customised to last The CCTV cameras installed in local trains have been customised to withstand shocks and vibrations of a train speeding around 80 to 100 kmph. The lenses of these cameras have a resolution of 3 megapixels.
