Mumbai has remained one of the favourite targets of terrorists.

The city has experienced a whopping 95 terrorist attacks 1989 onwards.

Terrorists have been innovative in their choice of explosives, too from acid bombs, locally available gelatin sticks and detonators to the deadly RDX and TNT, the city has seen it all.

Capital punishment

Gateway to Terror: On August 25, 2003, two bomb blasts occurred at the Gateway of India.

Senior prison officials from Maharashtra, requesting anonymity, said 15 people have been awarded capital punishment in the state for their involvement in terrorist strikes and over 190 others are being tried in different courts.

Twelve out of 100 convicts were awarded capital punishment in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case and three others Sayyed Mohammed Hanif, his wife Fehmida and Ashrat Ansari were awarded capital punishment on Thursday.

All other convicts in 1993 blast were sentenced to imprisonment varying from five years to life.

Preferred target

Mumbai has been the most preferred target for most terrorist organistions, primarily the separatist forces from Kashmir.

Over the past few years, there have been a series of attacks, including the local train blasts in July 2006 andu00a0 November 26, 2008, where twou00a0 prime hotels and another building, in south Mumbai, came under siege.
