A minor fire broke out on the INS Matanga, an ocean-going tug, while it was undergoing repairs at the Naval Dockyard yesterday. An Indian Navy official said the fire was soon extinguished. He added that that there were no casualties or damage to the vessel in the mishap.

The incident occurred around 3 pm, when steel-welding work was on in the sewage treatment compartment, and some insulating material in an adjacent compartment started smouldering and emitting thick smoke.
The duty personnel on site immediately detected this and the Naval Dockyard fire brigade was summoned. The blaze was brought under control shortly thereafter, and no casualties or any kind of damage to the ship was reported.
The mishap is the 14th such incident involving a naval vessel in the past 10 months, including the INS Sindhurakshak submarine that sank at the Mumbai harbour on August 18, 2013, killing 18 personnel on board.
