In an effort to reduce overcrowding on Mumbai’s trains, the Maharashtra government has formed a special committee to study and suggest staggered office timings for government offices located in Mumbai city and suburban districts, an official notification said on Friday.
The decision follows a request by Central Railway officials, who highlighted the heavy rush of commuters during morning and evening peak hours.
According to the government notification issued on July 18, the committee will review if adjusting office start and end times can ease congestion on trains.
The committee will be chaired by the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra and include senior officials from departments such as General Administration, Urban Development, Transport, and Industry. The Mumbai Suburban and City District Collectors, as well as the transport commissioner, are also part of the committee.
"Due to heavy crowding during morning and evening peak hours on Mumbai’s suburban railway services, a request has been received from Central Railway, Mumbai Division, to consider implementing staggered office timings for Central, State, and private offices across Mumbai," the notifications reads.
Taking this into consideration, the Maharashtra government has decided to form a committee under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary to examine the feasibility of staggered working hours for government offices located within Mumbai City and suburban districts, it further said.
The committee will be allowed to invite representatives from employees' unions as needed. It is expected to submit its report within three months, the notification said.
