The Mahayuti government is committed to Mumbai’s development, and the handing over of keys to new high-rise flats built in place of the old BDD chawls is proof of this commitment.
Addressing the crowd at a key handover function in Matunga on Thursday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that despite opposition, doubts over whether the government would be able to complete the project, and legal challenges, the Mahayuti pushed through and completed the BDD redevelopment.
“This is the kind of commitment the Mahayuti has for Mumbai, and the same will be shown in other infrastructure and housing projects,” Fadnavis said, signalling the issues likely to dominate the upcoming civic elections. The elections for 227 corporation seats are likely to be held at the end of 2025 or early 2026.
Fadnavis urged residents to retain their property. “Earlier, people used to accumulate gold to pass on as an asset to the next generation. Land in Mumbai, especially these redeveloped BDD flats, is no less than gold. I suggest people hold on to this property and pass it on as an asset to their next generation,” the CM added.
Speaking at the function, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar noted that the location of the redeveloped BDD buildings is prime, with high per-square-foot rates, and advised residents not to sell their flats. “The government should put a 10 to 12-year lock-in period for the allotted flats,” Pawar maintained.
Another Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, said the flats would be maintenance-free for 12 years. “For 12 years, residents will not have to worry about maintenance,” Shinde said.
Speaking at another event of dabbawalas, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that this fraternity is a key element of Mumbai and plays an important role in the city. “The dabbawalas too will be getting 500-square-foot flats costing Rs 25.50 lakh each,” Fadnavis added.
Aaditya Thackeray gives event a miss
At the redeveloped BDD key handover event, local MLA and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray stayed away from the function as he was not included in the list of speakers. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA from Bandra (East) constituency, Varun Sardesai, claimed that his cousin Aaditya, as the local MLA for Worli, had made significant efforts to push for the redevelopment of the BDD chawls.
