What began as a routine traffic violation in Vikhroli turned violent after an enraged motorcyclist returned to the spot and allegedly assaulted the traffic policeman who had fined him for talking on his mobile phone while riding.
According to police, the incident occurred on Thursday at a busy junction in Vikhroli when traffic constable Chand Kashinath Gangurde, 33, noticed a motorcyclist manoeuvring through traffic while speaking on his phone — a clear violation of traffic rules. Gangurde stopped the rider, questioned him and issued an e-challan of Rs 2000 as per norms.
Police said that after receiving the e-challan message, the accused, identified as Suraj Jatashankar Patwa, 25, allegedly nursed a grudge over the penalty. A short while later, Patwa allegedly returned to the same junction, confronted the constable and began abusing him over the fine.
Eyewitnesses told police that the situation escalated rapidly, with the accused questioning the constable’s authority and threatening him before suddenly launching a physical attack. The traffic policeman was allegedly slapped and pushed to the ground, causing him to suffer minor injuries.
Other traffic personnel rushed to Gangurde’s aid as shocked motorists and pedestrians looked on. The injured constable was later provided medical treatment. Senior police officers were alerted immediately, and a search was launched. Based on CCTV footage from the junction and statements of witnesses, the accused was identified and arrested.
A case has been registered against Patwa for assaulting a public servant, criminal intimidation, and obstructing a government official from discharging duty. “The fine was imposed solely because the rider was talking on his phone while riding, which endangers lives. Attacks on traffic personnel performing their duty will not be tolerated,” a senior police officer said.
