Negligence by civic authorities has left a 26-year-old man bedridden. The Goregaon resident suffered a fracture in his left leg after he fell into a manhole in Jogeshwari, allegedly left uncovered by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The victim, Shahid Javed Shaikh (26) claims that the doctors have advised him three months of bed rest post the accident. He is yet to undergo an operation, which could cost up to Rs 80,000. Shaikh, who runs a food stall in Goregaon, has a family of seven. The incident took place on January 13 when Shaikh and his friend Bhaktiyar Shaikh visited Caf&eacute; Tashkend Hotel on SV road.

&ldquo;It was around 10 pm and we were walking near the footpath. Just then, I fell into the manhole, which was covered with a small plank of plywood. My left leg went inside completely. The authorities had put no precautionary signboard for alerting citizens,&rdquo; said Shaikh, who was pulled out by Bhaktiyar and a local paan shop owner.
Shaikh was shifted to a private hospital in Andheri, where he was told he would have to undergo an operation for the fracture. &ldquo;They demanded Rs 80,000 for the operation, which I couldn&rsquo;t pay. So, I shifted to Cooper Hospital where I have currently spent around Rs 10,000 for my treatment,&rdquo; said Shaikh.

He added, &ldquo;I have Rs 20,000 in savings and 50 per cent of it has already been spent. I am yet to have the operation, which will cost me more. The doctors have also suggested bed rest for more than three months. I am worried about my family. How will they survive? The negligent officials should now compensate me, so that I can support my family.&rdquo;
Official speak Parag Masurkar, ward officer of the K-Ward said he has not received any report regarding the incident yet. &ldquo;We have carried out work on that stretch. I am unaware of the details, I will check with my officials,&rdquo; he said.
