A major accident occurred near Narpoli Police Station in Bhiwandi when an iron rod fell from an under-construction Mumbai Metro Line 5 bridge in Bhiwandi area of Thane district in Maharashtra, officials said on Tuesday.
The heavy rod came crashing down on a moving auto-rickshaw, seriously injuring a man sitting inside the vehicle, they said.
The locals and some eyewitnesses immediately rushed the victim to a nearby private hospital, where his condition remains critical.
The police rushed to the spot following the incident and also visited the hospital where the injured man has been admitted, sources said.

In an official statement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said that it expresses deep regret over the unfortunate incident that occurred at the Metro Line 5 construction site, where a tie rod -- installed as part of the temporary support system to deck slab structure two months ago -- unexpectedly fell onto an autorickshaw. A passenger suffered a head injury as a result.
As soon as the incident was reported, the Safety Heads of both M/s Afcons, the civil contractor, and M/s Systra-CEG-Systra India, the General Consultant, rushed to the hospital to ensure the injured passenger received immediate and comprehensive medical care. MMRDA has directed M/s Afcons to bear all medical expenses and provide necessary support to the affected individual.
Maintaining the highest standards of public safety and accountability is central to MMRDA’s mission.
Accordingly, the following strict actions have been initiated-
A penalty of Rs 50 lakh has been imposed on M/s Afcons, the civil contractor responsible for the construction activity.
A penalty of Rs 5 lakh has been levied on M/s Systra-CEG-Systra (India), the General Consultant for Metro Line 5, for supervisory lapses.
An independent enquiry has been set up under the Chief Safety Manager of AICA, General Consultant of Metro Line 2B, to conduct a neutral and expert investigation into the matter.
Further actions will be taken based on the findings of the enquiry.
MMRDA will ensure that any and all accountability measures are enforced and that systemic safety improvements are implemented immediately, the official statement said.
