The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Monday said that Kapurbawdi metro station on the Mumbai Metro Line 4 has taken shape with eight U-Girders installations in a single night.
It said that in a major engineering feat, eight U-Girders were successfully erected in a single night at Kapurbawdi Station on Mumbai Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Gaimukh).
The station is located on Ghodbunder Road in Thane district of Maharashtra and it will serve as a crucial interchange between Mumbai Metro Line 4 and Metro Line 5 (Thane–Bhiwandi) at Tatvagyan Vidhyapeeth Junction, the MMRDA said.
It said that the operation covered two major spans — G01–G02 and G11–G12, both left and right, in up and down directions. Each girder weighed nearly 97.92 metric tonnes, totalling 783.36 metric tonnes for the night. This marks a record-setting achievement for Mumbai Metro’s construction timeline.
The station itself features a 185-metre span supported by a unique 3-legged portal structure, designed to handle the integration of two high-capacity metro lines.
The total length of Mumbai Metro Line 4 stands at approx. 35.2 km with 32 metro stations and 8-car fully automated metro trains will run on the route.
More than 90 personnel were involved, including 28 riggers, 10 skilled, and 20 unskilled workers, along with 35 traffic marshals to manage the busy Ghodbunder Road area, the MMRDA said.

The lifting operation used heavy-duty machinery, including one 550T crane, three 500T cranes, four multi-axle vehicles, eleven counterweight trailers, six manlifts, six Farana cranes, and multiple support trucks and escort vehicles.
The overnight success highlights engineering precision, traffic coordination, and safe working practices in a high-traffic urban environment. Officials stated this sets a new standard for metro infrastructure development in Mumbai, the MMRDA said on Monday.
This achievement is seen as a key step forward in building a faster, greener, and better-connected Mumbai, with Metro Line 4 promising improved commute times and reduced congestion across the city, it said.
Train trials are likely to begin on a 10.5-km stretch that contains a total of ten stations on the Wadala-Thane Green Lines 4 and 4A in August.
The metro trials, which include the alignments of Line 4 and 4A, will be undertaken from Cadbury Junction to Gaimukh, and apart from these stations include those of Majiwada, Kapurbawadi, Manpada, Tikuji-Ni-Wadi, Dongripada, Vijay Garden, Kasarvadavli and Gownipada.
