The newly renovated Burn Care Centre at Raja Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in central Mumbai's Parel area was inaugurated on Saturday, officials said.

The centre has the capacity to treat 150-170 patients annually and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to improve patient care, an official statement said.
The inauguration was attended by Dr Sangita Rawat, Superintendent of KEM Hospital, Dr Vinita Puri, Head of the Plastic Surgery Department, and other senior officials of the hospital.
Focus on immediate and safe treatment
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Bhushan Gagrani, had previously directed the hospital to ensure timely and advanced treatment for burn patients. Additional safety measures to prevent infection were advised by the Additional Municipal Commissioner (West Suburbs).
The centre’s objective is to provide medical care to needy patients under various government schemes, said Deputy Commissioner (Public Health) Sharad Ugade.

Advanced equipment for critical care
The renovated facility now has 12 fully equipped beds, including intensive care units (ICU) with modern equipment such as ventilators, multiparameter monitors, dialysis machines, and other advanced tools to manage complications effectively.
The centre also features specialised furniture, proper lighting, and televisions to help distract patients during painful treatments. A dedicated treatment room ensures immediate care, while controlled access to the facility maintains infection safety.
Patient-centred
Dr Vinita Puri emphasised that the Burn Care Centre is committed to providing safe, efficient and compassionate care. She noted that burns cause physical, emotional and social trauma, and the centre plays a vital role in offering both treatment and emotional support.
The initiative is part of KEM Hospital’s ongoing efforts to develop infrastructure for advanced burn care and provide relief and hope to patients and their families, the official statement said.
Meanwhile, the BMC, in a post on X stated that the renovated Burn Care Centre was formally inaugurated on December 13. The upgraded centre is equipped with modern medical facilities and advanced technology to provide improved treatment for burn patients.
The BMC also said that the new centre has state-of-the-art medical infrastructure and treatment facilities.
