BMC wants to finish cyclone repairs, monsoon maintenance before admitting more patients

The civic body will take another 10 days to repair the damages cyclone Tauktae caused at the city’s three jumbo Covid Care Centres (CCCs), and utilise this time to also look at other maintenance issues. This means no new admissions to the BKC, Dahisar and Mulund facilities for now.

Close to 580 Covid-19 patients at the three centres were shifted to other hospitals as a precautionary measure in view of the cyclone.
The zonal deputy commissioners of the BMC have been instructed to also prepare these jumbo facilities for monsoon, and the contractors have been told to start the work.
Besides fixing the broken or torn tents, angular arrangements of the structures would also be examined. The structural auditors, too, have been instructed to check the stability of these centres and point out the areas that need repairing. At one centre, the gas and electricity lines are close to each other, which will be sorted now.

A civic official said, “There were maintenance issues at some places, but they were fixed temporarily. Now that the centres are vacant, we have time for repairs and the additional municipal commissioner has instructed us to ensure the centres are ready in 10 days. We will have to face the wrath of nature again in monsoon and so we are strengthening the existing structures.”
Recent fire incidents at different hospitals had necessitated audits of electrical installations and other services, and with time in hand, the BMC plans to address these issues as well.
