The first heavy showers of the season led to several delays and cancellations of trains on the Central Line.
The Central Railway said as on Monday 4 pm, 20 services were short-terminated at Dadar or Parel on the Main Line.
On the Harbour Line, 30 services were cancelled owing to suspension of traffic between 10.30 am and 11.30 am between Vadala Road and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
Approximately eight mail express trains were delayed by around two hours due to the heavy rains.
Trains are running normally, albeit with delays, following increased rainfall after 3 pm. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the next few hours.
It further informed that two key pumping stations near CSMT and Byculla — one at ONGC Yellow Gate and the other at Mahalaxmi — were initially non-operational. The Mahalaxmi pumping station was made operational around 11.30 am.
With the high tide peaking at 11.24 am at 4.75 metres, floodgates had to be closed nearly an hour early, impeding efforts to reduce water levels.
Mumbai city received extremely heavy rainfall today, with 253 mm recorded during the first showers of the monsoon — marking the earliest monsoon arrival in recorded history.
Earlier in the day, a few hours of relentless rainfall led to waterlogging in several low-lying parts of Mumbai and on railway tracks, disrupting road traffic and local train services on Monday morning, officials said.
Amid the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) warnings of thunderstorms and gusty winds, a heavy downpour battered parts of Mumbai—particularly the island city.
Intense rainfall submerged tracks on the Central Railway network at Masjid, Byculla, Dadar, Matunga, and Badlapur stations, causing delays in train services during peak morning hours.
Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Monday morning, leading to suspension of suburban train services between Wadala Road and Chhatrapati Shivaj Maharaj Terminus on Central Railway's Harbour line from 10:25 am, while waterlogging was reported from several areas in the metropolis.
Services on the main line's slow corridor were running normally, though the fast corridor witnessed a few signal and track changing point failures, CR Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila said, as reported by PTI.
"Heavy waterlogging was also reported in the CSMT yard, affecting Up Through lines and sidings 308, 331, 347, and 231, disrupting train movements to and from platforms 5, 6, 7, 10 to 18," he informed.
