After being battered by rain for two days in a row on the weekend, Mumbai saw a relief from rainfall on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) withdrew its earlier orange alert for Mumbai for Monday, and changed it to a yellow one while issuing a green alert for Tuesday. Other coastal districts of Maharashtra, such as Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, were also issued a yellow alert for Monday, and a green alert for Tuesday.

For two days in a row, the Colaba observatory recorded over 100 mm of rainfall in a span of 24 hours, between 8 am on Saturday and 8 am on Sunday, and from 8 am on Sunday and 8 am on Monday.

According to figures from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Colaba observatory recorded 101.2 mm of rainfall in a span of 24 hours between Sunday and Monday morning. Similarly, within 33 hours between 8 am on Saturday till 5.30 pm on Sunday (evening), IMD’s Colaba observatory recorded 214 mm of rainfall. Of this, 120.8 mm of rainfall was recorded between 8 am on Saturday and 8 am on Sunday, and 93.2 mm of rainfall was recorded between 8.30 am on Sunday and 5.30 pm on Sunday (evening).

This monsoon, Colaba has already recorded 107.17 per cent of Mumbai’s annual average rainfall, with 2245.2 mm of rainfall against an average of 2095 mm. The Santacruz observatory has recorded 133.70 per cent of rainfall, with 3100.4 mm of rainfall, against an annual average of 2319 mm.

Water stock drops

The water stock in the seven lakes that supply drinking water to Mumbai was at 97.57 per cent on Monday morning, reporting a drop from Sunday’s figures of 99.5 per cent. A senior civic official from BMC’s hydraulics department said, “This is owing to the gates of Bhatsa and Middle Vaitarna being opened for safety reasons.” The catchment areas of these lakes, located in Thane and Nashik districts, have reported a cumulative rainfall of over 300 mm in 24 hours between Sunday and Monday morning.
