As heavy rains lashed Mumbai throughout the day on Monday, chronic waterlogging spots at Hindmata in Dadar East and Gandhi Market in Sion were submerged under up to 1.5 feet of water. Both areas are low-lying and located on the busy arterial Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, a crucial connector between the eastern suburbs and the island city.
Conceptualised in 2018, the BMC completed the construction of underground water-holding tanks at these flooding hotspots in 2021, aimed at easing monsoon inundation. The Hindmata tank has a capacity to store 30 lakh litres of water.
On Monday, Hindmata reported waterlogging between 9.30 am and 1.45 pm, forcing Mumbai Traffic Police to shut BA Road along this stretch. Commuters were diverted to the Parel TT flyover, resulting in heavy snarls. Similarly, Gandhi Market was inundated from noon to 2 pm, causing traffic jams along the stretch.
According to the BMC’s Disaster Management Control Room, 11 dewatering pumps were operational around the Hindmata catchment area, including six at Hindmata junction, all running at full capacity. At Gandhi Market, too, six pumps were deployed to drain floodwater.
