The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in Mumbai and Thane district.
In a nowcast warning, issued by the IMD Mumbai at 5 pm on Tuesday, the weather department said thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rain are likely to occur in isolated areas of Mumbai and Thane over the next three hours.
A yellow warning was issued by the IMD for Mumbai and Thane districts, cautioning residents about possible thunderstorms, rain, and gusty winds.
"Wind speeds may reach between 30 to 40 kmph, and residents are advised to take precautions to stay safe during the period," the weather department said.
The IMD has urged the public to avoid open areas, stay indoors if possible.
“The recent thunderstorm activity and rainfall over Interior Maharashtra and Konkan is mainly due to a troughing pattern in the easterly winds at lower levels. This, combined with increased moisture incursion and higher daytime temperatures, has created favourable conditions for storm development,” a weather department official said on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Mumbai greeted Tuesday with a bright and sunny morning, as the city experiences dry yet humid conditions during the Diwali festivities.
The IMD has forecast clear skies for the day, though residents can expect increasing temperatures and a humid atmosphere that may add to the discomfort.
According to the latest Mumbai weather updates from IMD, Colaba recorded a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees Celsius above normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 26.4 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity was measured at 89 per cent.
In Santacruz, the mercury rose slightly higher, with a maximum temperature of 35.9 degrees Celsius, 1.9 degrees Celsius above normal, and a minimum of 24.6 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels were recorded at 75 per cent.
On October 21, the Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app reported in its latest Mumbai weather updates that the city’s air quality remained in the 'poor' category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 212 at 10.00 AM.
As per the SAMEER app dashboard, many areas across Mumbai showed 'moderate' AQI. Colaba, Worli, Borivali, Kandivali and Ghatkopar recorded 'moderate' air quality, with an AQI of 152, 122, 180, 151 and 192, respectively.
Powai, Malad, Andheri and Byculla recorded 'poor' air quality, with an AQI of 233, 280, 261 and 267, respectively.
Bandra Kurla Complex and Mazgaon recorded 'very poor' are air quality, with an AQI of 374 and 309, respectively.
According to data from the SAMEER app, Navi Mumbai recorded air quality in the 'moderate' category with an AQI of 165, while Thane registered a 'moderate' AQI of 154.
The air quality index from 0 to 100 is considered 'good', 100 to 200 'moderate', 200 to 300 'poor', 300 to 400 'very poor' and from 400 to 500 or above 'severe'.
