Mumbai took a major leap in urban infrastructure on Thursday as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated four landmark projects under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The inauguration, attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, and other senior officials, showcased Mumbai’s ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity, urban mobility, and metro expansion.
The projects include the Mumbai Metro Simulator Training Centre at Mandale Depot, the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extended corridor, the Metro Staff Residence at Malvani, and the Kalanagar Sub-Flyover (Arm D). Together, these developments promise to reduce travel time, improve commuter experience, and strengthen infrastructure resilience.
The SCLR extension, featuring South Asia’s first sharp-curvature 100-meter-radius cable-stayed bridge, connects the Eastern and Western Express Highways, cutting travel time from Chembur to Vile Parle by nearly an hour. The 1.66 km stretch, with a 215-meter orthotropic steel deck, is expected to transform east-west road travel in the city.
The Mumbai Metro Training Institute, the largest of its kind in India, offers simulation-based metro driver and maintenance training for up to 144 trainees at a time, helping save an estimated Rs 255 crore in training costs over the next decade.
The Malvani staff residence comprises two 20-storey buildings with 156 flats each, equipped with fireproof doors, safety systems, and robotic parking facilities, providing modern housing for metro staff.
Meanwhile, the Kalanagar Sub-Flyover (Arm D) creates a signal-free east-west link between Dharavi and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, easing congestion in a heavily trafficked corridor.
Speaking at the inauguration, CM Fadnavis described the SCLR’s sharp-curve bridge as a milestone in engineering and urban connectivity, noting that these projects bring Prime Minister Modi’s vision of “Mumbai in 59 Minutes” closer to reality. Deputy CMs Shinde and Pawar emphasised how the metro and related infrastructure will reduce traffic congestion, enhance safety, and support Mumbai’s growth as a global city.
Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee highlighted that these initiatives integrate advanced technology, sustainable design, and commuter-centric planning, reinforcing Mumbai’s journey toward becoming a world-class metropolis.
Collectively, these projects are not just about roads, bridges, or buildings; they are about faster, safer, and more efficient urban life, strengthening Mumbai’s infrastructure while improving the quality of life for its residents.
