The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai today, coinciding with Dahi Handi celebrations.
“Heavy rains are likely across Konkan. Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Nashik remain under red alert on Saturday,” said IMD scientist Shubhangi Bhute.
Mumbai Radar shows intense to very intense convection over the city and adjoining area. It is likely to continue for next 2-3 hours.

Residents are urged to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary due to intense rainfall and the risk of flooding.
Between 1 AM and 4 AM on Saturday, several parts of the city witnessed extremely heavy rain. Marol Fire Station recorded 207 mm, Nariyalwadi School in Santacruz 202 mm, Chakala Municipal School in Andheri 195 mm, Malpa Dongri Municipal School 183 mm, and Andheri Fire Station 177 mm.
The Eastern Suburbs also experienced intense rainfall. Tagore Nagar Municipal School in Vikhroli recorded 196 mm, Building Proposal Office in Vikhroli West received 195 mm, N Ward Office measured 192 mm, Ramabai Municipal School in Ghatkopar recorded 189 mm, and MCMCR in Powai saw 187 mm.

Whereas, Vikhroli recorded the highest rainfall with 257.5 mm, followed closely by Santacruz at 244.7 mm and Sion with 228.0 mm.
Other areas also saw significant precipitation, including Juhu with 219.5 mm, Bandra at 184.0 mm, and Byculla recording 172.0 mm. In Chembur, the Tata Power station recorded 131.5 mm, while Colaba received comparatively lower rainfall at 83.2 mm.
Between 08:30 AM on Friday and 06:30 AM on Saturday, Mumbai experienced intermittent rainfall, according to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC).
Light showers were recorded in the morning and afternoon hours, with 0.25 mm at 09:30 AM, 0.75 mm at 15:30, and 0.76 mm at both 16:30 and 17:30. No rainfall was observed between 10:30 AM and 13:30 PM, and again from 18:30 PM to 20:30 PM.
Evening and night saw slightly heavier rainfall, including 3.03 mm at 21:30, 1.51 mm at 23:30, and substantial showers after midnight: 9.14 mm at 00:30, 7.12 mm at 01:30, 17.28 mm at 02:30, 9.90 mm at 03:30, 11.68 mm at 04:30, 3.81 mm at 05:30, and 2.29 mm at 06:30.
The total rainfall recorded for the day was 68.80 mm, contributing to a cumulative total of 1,764.71 mm for 2025 so far, compared to 2,515.36 mm in 2024 during the same period.
Authorities have requested that citizens take necessary precautions, stay indoors, and ensure their safety during the heavy downpour.
The Mumbai Police has also issued a warning to citizens following the IMD alert. In a post on X, the department stated, "Mumbaikars are advised to avoid non-essential travel and exercise caution while venturing out."
Mumbai is experiencing heavy rainfall with an Orange Alert in effect. Water-logging and reduced visibility have been reported in several areas.
