Heavy downpour on Saturday resulted in many city areas waterlogged and flooded. Waterlogging has been reported at many areas like Gandhi Market, which is a chronic affected spot, Antop Hill area, Everard Nagar near Chunabhatti, Hans Mogra Junction near Andheri, and inside the tunnels from Mankhurd T Junction to Maharashtra Nagar.

The Indian Meteorological Department’s Regional Meteorological Centre Mumbai had issued an orange alert initially, which changed to a red alert for Saturday and an orange alert for Monday. IMD Mumbai Director Shubhangi Bhute in a statement said, “In the coming 24 hours Konkan region is expected to experience heavy to really heavy rainfall, and Raigad, Thane, Nashik Ghat area, and Mumbai region are already on red alert.”




The IMD has also said that under the current weather influence, heavy rainfall over Maharashtra is very likely to continue till August 21, with possibility of lightning, thunder, and occasional gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph. Commuters complained of delays on suburban and outstation trains on Central Railway throughout the day after reports of waterlogging on tracks since morning at Chembur, Tilak Nagar, Kurla and Chunabhatti.

The Aarey underpass on Marol Maroshi Road was also severely flooded and left impassable for vehicular traffic. Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Kailash Shinde directed the municipal machinery to remain on alert, and asked citizens not to panic even if the intensity of rainfall increases. The disaster management team said that there were no major incidents, besides one tree fall. 

Between Friday and Saturday morning, NMMC recorded an average rainfall of 134.67 mm, with Koparkhairane receiving the highest at 172.20 mm. Morbe Dam has received 2367.6 mm rainfall since June 1 and is now at 82.93 per cent capacity, ensuring adequate water stock for Navi Mumbai.

With heavy overnight showers Vashi alone recorded 173.4 mm between midnight and 6am the civic body continues to monitor vulnerable areas. High tides of 3.65 metres were recorded in the afternoon, with another tide of 3.56 metres expected early Sunday morning. There was an incident of water logging in APMC Market at around 5 AM on Saturday.

Despite the red alert, officials confirmed that there has been no major flooding so far in Navi Mumbai.
