The Western Railway has drawn up an ambitious three-year roadmap to progressively boost suburban train services, presenting the plan to Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar during his weekend visit to Mumbai. The blueprint hinges on completing new rail corridors under construction between Khar Road and Dahanu to permanently separate suburban traffic from mail and express trains.

The sixth line between Bandra Terminus (Khar) and Goregaon was commissioned on November 5, 2023, followed by the Goregaon–Kandivli stretch on October 7, 2024. The Kandivli–Borivli section is expected to be ready by October 2025, completing the continuous Bandra Terminus–Borivli corridor.

Phase Two revives a long-delayed project to add two new lines between Bandra and Mumbai Central, targeted for completion within two years. Meanwhile, plans for a fifth and sixth line between Borivli and Virar — currently in the sanction stage — aim for completion by December 2027, allowing more suburban trains.

Beyond Virar, only two lines currently constrain train movement. A third and fourth line between Virar and Dahanu, due by December 2026, will remove bottlenecks and deliver the biggest boost to services. Additionally, the Harbour line will be extended from Goregaon to Borivli by December 2027, further expanding connectivity.

Key highlights

Phase Two: Two new lines Bandra–Mumbai Central by Aug 2027.

Borivli–Virar: Fifth and sixth lines by Dec 2027.
