Mumbai: Oxygen pumped into old Matunga drain as Western Railway gears up for monsoon
Updated On: 16 June, 2026 08:25 AM IST | Mumbai | Rajendra B. Aklekar
Western Railway has undertaken a first-of-its-kind operation to prevent monsoon flooding by pumping oxygen into a hidden 250-metre culvert beneath the Matunga workshop for cleaning. The project, along with track raising and drainage upgrades, aims to minimise waterlogging and train disruptions

From pumping oxygen to revive an old, hidden drain to lifting a track by six inches for 1 km, the Western Railway (WR) is doing everything in its capacity to avoid any waterlogging this monsoon season. The hidden drain in question — a waterway below Matunga workshop — was sanitised and a pathway created for water to ensure there is no blockage this time. Last year, there had been water-logging issues at Matunga Road, after which WR launched a drive to discover the old drain.
