Keeping in mind the poor response it received from residents, who refused to use artificial ponds for visarjan, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) this year installed gabion walls inside the lakes to prevent them from getting polluted.

Deputy Municipal Comm-issioner Jagannath Sinnarkar said, &ldquo;We had constructed artificial ponds to save the natural ones from the chemicals that are released by the PoP idols after visarjan, but got a poor response from the people.
Because we have to protect the lakes from getting polluted, we decided to use the Italian concept of installing a gabion wall. We experimented with the process three years ago. After getting a good response in our jurisdiction, as many 17 out of 23 lakes at important locations now have a gabion wall in them.&rdquo;
Resident speak Vashi resident Kiran Bhave said, &ldquo;The concept of constructing a wall in the lake is beneficial, as we get to immerse the idols in natural water without polluting the entire water body.&rdquo;
