In the wake of the recent building collapse in Thane, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has ordered structural audits of all the residential buildings that are more than 30 years old, and under its jurisdiction, before September 30.

The civic body has told housing complexes to conduct structural audits. NMMC, in its 2015-2016 survey, has revealed that there are 92 dilapidated structures under its jurisdiction from Airoli to Belapur.
Municipal Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare, told mid-day, &ldquo;We have urged the residents to get the structural audit of their buildings done. This can be done with the help of our structure engineers with a nominal fee. If any structure is found (to be) dilapidated we will ask the tenants to evacuate the building and accommodate them in our community halls.&rdquo;
He further revealed that those who fail to carry out the structural audits would have to pay a fine of R25,000. In addition, commenting on the cluster re-development he said, &ldquo;The cluster re-development scheme has been finalised; however, we haven&rsquo;t received any notification. Only after getting a notification on the same, steps can be taken to initiate cluster development. Further, the High Court has said that without their consent no re-development should take place.&rdquo;
There are around 14,000 residential structures across NMMC&rsquo;s jurisdiction, out of which those older than 30 years will have to conduct structural audits before September 30.
Meanwhile, there have been several house slab collapse incidents reported in Navi Mumbai.
On June 15 a family of three in Vashi&rsquo;s sector 10 was lucky to have survived after a portion of their ceiling slab fell, as at the time of the incident they were not present at home.
