Election authorities seized unaccounted cash worth R16.16 lakh from a white Mercedes during a vehicle check near Arenja Corner in Vashi at around 12.35 pm on Friday, January 9, as the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) remains in force ahead of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections 2025. The cash was recovered by a Static Surveillance Team (SST) and seized as per election norms.
The action is part of intensified monitoring directed by the State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure free, fair, and transparent polls. According to official sources, 27 Static Surveillance Teams have been deployed across nine key locations in the city, operating in three shifts to maintain round-the-clock vigilance during the MCC period.
The operation was conducted in the presence of Assistant Election Decision Officer Sagar More, MCC Cell Nodal Officer and Deputy Commissioner Dr Amol Palve, Chief Accounts and Finance Officer (Transport Undertaking) Tushar Daundkar, Superintendent and Recovery Officer Sanjay Gaikwad, Police Naik Sachin Suryavanshi, and SST team leader Ajay Shelar.
Officials said the checks are part of routine surveillance to curb the illegal movement of cash and other inducements during the election period. The administration confirmed that due legal procedures are being followed and further action is underway in coordination with the Income Tax department. Civic authorities reiterated that strict vigilance will continue across Navi Mumbai to prevent violations of the MCC.
