The Navi Mumbai Police have apprehended eight individuals from Bengaluru in connection with a case of dacoity and abduction, during which they impersonated law enforcement officers to unlawfully appropriate Rs 31.7 lakh from a man.

The suspects were captured within the jurisdiction of the Upperpet Police Station in Bengaluru on June 2, around 36 hours after the incident that transpired in the Juinagar area of Navi Mumbai on May 31, Senior Inspector Devidas Katale said.

According to Inspector Katale, the complainant is engaged in the business of depositing cash in automated teller machines (ATMs) on behalf of others, and the gang specifically targeted him at an ATM of a nationalised bank in Juinagar on the morning of May 31.

One member of the group posed as a police officer, assaulted the complainant, abused him, and pushed him into a vehicle, the officer said.

According to PTI, the authorities indicated that the suspects allegedly threatened the man and forcibly took cash amounting to Rs 31.73 lakh, subsequently abandoning him on Palm Beach Road.

"Our probe team identified the car used in the crime. On enquiring with the driver, we found out that the accused allegedly posed as police officers from the Kerala cyber police and took the car from the Sanpada bridge and left it there after committing the robbery," said Katale.

The police received a tip-off that the gang had fled to Bengaluru, and a team was dispatched to the city, the officer added.

He further informed that the accused were natives of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and the police recovered valuables worth Rs 30.4 lakh from them.

A first information report (FIR) has been registered against the accused under sections 310(2) (dacoity), 138 (abduction), 204 (personating a public servant), and 61 (Criminal Conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the officer said.

18 members of Navi Mumbai society booked for threatening resident

The Navi Mumbai Police have registered a case against 18 members of a housing society for allegedly threatening and defaming a resident after a dispute over redevelopment of their premises, an officer said on Friday.

The 37-year-old complainant told the police that one of his friends had highlighted 'mismanagement' in the society's redevelopment, which angered the accused.

The accused members went to the complainant's house on the evening of June 1, and allegedly abused him, said the officer from the Nerul police station, citing the FIR.

The accused allegedly threatened the complainant with physical harm and warned him and his family members that they would not be spared, the officer said.
