In a major crackdown on electricity theft, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has registered a case against a Nerul resident for allegedly tampering with the power supply and stealing electricity worth over Rs 56,900. Including pending dues, the total financial loss to MSEDCL stands at Rs 82,850.
The accused, Kanchan Kambha Thakur, was found illegally drawing electricity at her residence in Plot No. 14, Flat No. 302, Sector 14, Kukshetgaon, Nerul, by bypassing the disconnected meter and tapping directly into the main line.

During a routine inspection led by Hemant Chore, assistant engineer of MSEDCL’s Nerul division, along with technicians Santosh Kolekar and Rahul Zende, officials discovered a 2.5 mm diameter wire running from the main cut-out directly to the MCB inside the flat, completely bypassing the energy meter.
Officials said the power supply to the flat was disconnected on October 6, 2023, due to non-payment. However, for over 14 months, the resident had allegedly been using electricity illegally, stealing 2598 units worth Rs 56,900. An additional Rs 25,950 was pending in unpaid bills.
A case has been registered at Vashi police station under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003. Mamta Pandey, MSEDCL PRO, said, “This is a serious offence. Electricity theft not only causes financial loss to the company but also affects honest consumers. We urge all users to pay their bills and use power legally. Strict action will be taken against those tampering with meters or drawing unauthorised electricity.”
Senior officials, including Chief Engineer Sanjay Patil and Superintending Engineer Deepak Patil, have stated that inspection drives will continue across Navi Mumbai to crack down on such violations.
