A soil slide was reported from a landslide-prone area in Bhandup (West) on Tuesday evening, prompting a swift response from civic and emergency services. The incident occurred near Sai Niketan CHS, opposite Omega School in Khindipada, one of Mumbai’s 32 major dangerous spots identified by authorities.
According to information received from the S Ward Control, the incident was first reported on July 22 at around 7:32 PM. Mud and loose soil reportedly slid down from an adjacent hilly area, posing a threat to nearby structures.
As per the latest update received at 11:15 AM on July 23, Junior Engineer Datta Patil from the S Ward Building and Factory department confirmed that portions of two already vacated houses had collapsed due to the slide. Additionally, three to four adjacent houses were evacuated as a precautionary measure to ensure residents’ safety.
Multiple emergency agencies, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), Mumbai Police, and Ward staff, were mobilised to the site. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team was also deployed to assess and monitor the situation.
No injuries have been reported in the incident.
Passenger injured as landslide debris hits local train coach at Kasara station
In another incident, a male passenger suffered injuries after debris from a landslide entered a coach of a suburban train arriving at Kasara station in Thane district on Tuesday night, a Central Railway (CR) official said, reported PTI.
Swapnil Nila, chief public relations officer, CR, told PTI that the incident occurred when the local train was entering into platform No. 4 at Kasara station, located about 120 km from Mumbai CSMT, at around 9.15 pm.
The injured passenger was administered first aid by the station's duty staff. Engineering staff inspected the track and declared it safe for train operations at 9.35 pm, he said.
Nila said the landslide occurred when the train's third coach from the rear was passing from the site. A small amount of mud and stones entered the train, whose doors were open, reported PTI.
There was no disruption of the suburban or long-distance train services, he added.
