Authorities in Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli have declared a two-day closure for all schools within their jurisdictions, on August 18 and 19, due to heavy rain and a ‘Red Alert’ issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This precautionary measure, aimed at ensuring the safety of students, follows advisories from the State Emergency Operations Centre, the Thane District Collector, and the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) issued an official circular confirming that all educational institutions — ranging from pre-primary to higher secondary schools, government-run, aided, or unaided — will remain closed on these two days. “The safety of our students is paramount. Given the current weather conditions and the red alert, all schools will be closed on August 18 and 19,” the circular stated.
School authorities were directed to ensure that students attending afternoon sessions on Monday were escorted home safely, while school staff was to remain at the school premises until every student is accounted for. Any exams, training programmes, or other school-related events scheduled during this period are to be postponed and rescheduled.
Similarly, in Kalyan, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) announced the closure of all schools in the region, including private and self-financed institutions, as a preventive step due to the heavy rain. The local education authorities have stressed the need for schools to maintain close communication with parents, ensuring students’ safe commute home.
In Kalyan, intense rainfall from Monday afternoon led to severe waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas between Shivaji Chowk and Bail Bazar in Kalyan West. Local train services were also heavily affected, with all Up and Down trains facing indefinite delays due to rising water levels on tracks.
Kalyan railway station experienced a complete shutdown of electronic indicators, and passengers were informed of significant delays in train services. Authorities urged commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay updated on the situation through official channels. With water levels continuing to rise in parts of the city, residents have been advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
