The Gamdevi police have arrested a 41-year-old man for allegedly murdering a 56-year-old local resident whose body was found on a pavement along Carmichael Road, a posh residential stretch near Peddar Road in South Mumbai.
The deceased, identified as Arvind Atmaram Jadhav, was found with a deep injury on his forehead on Tuesday night. He was declared dead before arrival at the hospital, initially leading police to suspect an accidental fall. However, after being informed by the authorities, Arvind’s brother, Anil, sensed something was amiss. Following a preliminary investigation, officers found signs of foul play and reclassified the case as a homicide.
Both brothers lived at the Chairman Bungalow on Carmichael Road, near the spot where Arvind’s body was found. While Anil, 51, is a musician, Arvind was unemployed at the time, according to police. On Tuesday morning, a passersby noticed Arvind lying in a pool of blood near the Marlboro Compound on ML Dahanukar Marg and alerted the police. After receiving the post-mortem report from Nair Hospital, officers concluded that the assault and Arvind’s death likely took place in the early hours of Tuesday.
Anil refused to accept that his brother’s death was accidental and urged the police to treat it as murder. Upon reviewing CCTV footage from the area, investigators spotted a man loitering near the crime scene around the estimated time of the incident. Anil later identified him as Vedprakash Kaushal Mishra. Using technical surveillance, eyewitness accounts, and inputs from local sources, police tracked Mishra down near the Mahalaxmi Temple. During questioning, he allegedly confessed to the crime. He has been booked under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
According to the preliminary investigation, Mishra struck Arvind on the head with an iron spade during a quarrel. The argument reportedly began when Arvind objected to Mishra sitting in the area. Mishra, a resident of the Darya Sagar slum in Gamdevi, was known to the victim. Police also suspect that Mishra was under the influence of substances at the time of the incident, and he was sent for a medical examination. Mishra was produced in court on Wednesday and remanded to police custody.
