Ethiopian runners Tadu Abate Deme and Yeshi Kalayu Chekole won the men’s and women’s elite races respectively at the 21st edition of the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2026 on Sunday.

The event is a World Athletics Gold Label Road Race.

The top three finishers in both elite races received prize money of USD 50,000 for first place, USD 25,000 for second, and USD 15,000 for third.

In the women’s elite race, Yeshi Chekole claimed her first major marathon victory with a time of 2:25:13.

The 28-year-old ran a controlled race, staying with the leading group before breaking away in the final kilometres to finish alone. Her winning time was the fifth-fastest among women’s winners in the history of the Mumbai Marathon.

“I am very happy to be the champion today,” Yeshi said after the race.

“I came here hoping to break the course record, but the weather was challenging. Still, I felt strong throughout the race.”

Ethiopian runners completed the podium

Kidsan Alema finished behind Yeshi after briefly leading in the latter stages, while other Ethiopian runners completed the podium.

In the men’s elite race, Tadu Abate edged past Kenya’s Leonard Kiprotich Langat in a closely fought contest. Abate pulled away in the final kilometre to win in 2:09:55, while Langat finished second, 15 seconds behind. Eritrea’s Merhawi Kesete secured third place with a time of 2:10:22.

“It was a very competitive and tactical race,” Langat said, praising the course and organisation. Abate described the hills as tough but said he focused on conserving energy in the second half of the race.

With these victories, Ethiopia swept both the men’s and women’s titles at the Mumbai Marathon for the seventh time.

Sanjivani Jadhav emerged as the top Indian woman

Among Indian runners, Sanjivani Jadhav emerged as the top Indian woman on her marathon debut. She finished tenth overall with a time of 2:49:02. Nirmaben Thakor finished second among Indian women, while Sonam completed the podium in third place.

In the Indian men’s category, Kartik Karkera finished as the top Indian runner with a personal best time of 2:19:55. Defending champion Anish Thapa finished second, followed by Pradeep Chaudhary in third.

The top three finishers in the Indian elite men’s and women’s categories received prize money of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 4 lakh and Rs 3 lakh respectively.
