A 28-year-old woman was arrested late on Wednesday night for attacking her two sons, killing one and injuring the other. Identified as Sampa Karamkar, she attempted suicide as she was frustrated with her frail health.

&ldquo;She decided to kill her sons as she thought that they would not be taken care of after she dies,&rdquo; said S Nikam, inspector of Mumbra police station, adding that she suffered from pneumonia, typhoid and jaundice in bouts since June 23. Preliminary investigation also revealed that she was unhappy in her marital life, as her husband did not have any time for them.

Chinmay Karamkar, 37, worked in a jewellery shop in Zaveri Bazar and was out of the house for more than 12 hours and so his wife Sampa had to handle all the responsibilities with nobody to help. She also felt helpless as her younger son was diagnosed with dengue and the family lacked money for his treatment.
The TV cable connection was also cut on Tuesday due to non-payment and this became the tipping point for Sampa, who on Wednesday plunged a sharp knife in the neck of her 18-month-old son, killing him on the spot and then attacked her 11-year-old son Chayaan.
&ldquo;Chayaan resisted the attack and got injured on his hands and throat. Later, the woman attempted suicide by trying to slit her throat,&rdquo; added Nikam. A bleeding Chayaan shouted for help and that was when one of the neighbours informed Chinmay.

Sampa and her son were taken to Mumbradevi hospital, where he narrated the whole incident to the police. The woman also confessed to her crime after which she was shifted to Kalwa hospital.
A case has been registered under IPC section 302 (punishment for murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 309 (attempted suicide). Sampa was produced in Thane Sessions court yesterday and was remanded in judicial custody of 14 days.
Advocate Ismail Shaikh, appearing on behalf of the accused said, &ldquo;She is not in the proper frame of mind as she is suffering from clinical depression.&rdquo;
